Dean’s Bottom is pleased to present Production, 2026 by Gray Wielebinski, an olfactive site-specific intervention into Frieze London’s bathrooms. The sculptures take the form of urinal cakes and toilet rim blocks that diffuse a custom scent, made in collaboration with perfumer Alina Miron, invoking the smells of Wielebinski’s studio. Housed in cage-like forms, the deodoriser blocks explore the ways in which experiences of intimacy and safety in the public realm can be intensely surveilled and controlled.
Notes of pencil shavings, paint, dust and sweat permeate the lavatories as fairgoers sniff their way between the private space of the artist’s studio and Frieze’s public commercial environment.
This embodied intermingling of disparate spaces traces the ways in which privacy impacts our psychic vulnerability. The newly composed scent of the studio melds with the smell of industrially manufactured deodoriser blocks used to mask natural bathroom odours. As the work’s title suggests, the process of artistic production and presentation resounds with our most intimate bodily functions.
Production expands Wielebinski’s recent explorations with scent and site-specific bathroom interventions, and draws on the artist’s wider practice, reconfiguring everyday objects to reveal how our bodies routinely negotiate systems of power.
We are very grateful for the technical expertise and fabrication support provided by the Bio-Productions team and would like to thank our supporters on the project: Heather and Carole of the cleaning team, Lou, Stefan Benchoam, Katy Green, Eva Langret, Robert Sims, Eddie Olin, Max Radford, James Milner, Camille Houzé, and Oswaldo Nicoletti.
